Do the trick: Accomplish something, succeed. Spoken if something does the trick, it solves a problem or provides what is needed to get a good result. Dating from the early nineteenth century, this cliché uses “trick” in the sense of an accomplishment. As in Add some pepper to the sauce and that should do the trick.
